The U.S. Army Heritage and Education Center (USAHEC) welcomes Dr. Megan Kate Nelson to give a lecture titled, “Fighting in the Desert: The American Civil War in the Southwest,” based on her 2021 Pulitzer Prize Finalist book, The Three-Cornered War: The Union, the Confederacy, and Native Peoples in the Fight for the West. This lecture is the second of four fall lectures for the theme “Historical Mindedness in a Near-Peer Competitive Environment,” on Wednesday, September 14, at 6:30 p.m. EST at USAHEC, 950 Soldiers Drive, Carlisle, PA 17013. The public is invited to attend the lecture in person or virtually via live stream through https://www.armywarcollege.edu/live/

During this lecture, Dr. Nelson will reframe the American Civil War by introducing the national conflict’s impact on Indigenous peoples in the West and analyzing the strategic connections between the Civil War, Indian War, and western expansion. In highlighting the Civil War in the West, Dr. Nelson points attention to nine charismatic individuals who fought for regional control in the West in the midst of the larger military conflict.

Dr. Nelson is an expert in the history of the American Civil War, the U.S. West, and popular culture. Her work has been featured in the New York Times, Smithsonian Magazine, Preservation Magazine, and Civil War Times. In 2021, Dr. Nelson was honored as an elected fellow of the Society of American Historians and prior to 2014, Dr. Nelson taught U.S. History and American Studies at Cal State Fullerton, Brown, Harvard, and Texas Tech University.

The USAHEC’s Perspectives Lecture Series is a graduate-level speaker program with two lecture seasons per year. The event is free and open to the public.
